When a valve slams shut, the moving column of water has to stop somewhere. The resulting pressure spike — water hammer — travels back through the pipework as a shock wave, and over time it loosens joints, cracks fittings and damages pumps. An arrestor gives that energy somewhere to go.

Downstream of quick-closing solenoid and float valves, on appliance branches, in booster set manifolds, and on any line where you can hear a bang when a valve closes.
Selecting an arrestor
Size according to the fixture units served and the pipe run length, and install as close as practical to the source of the surge.
