What is the difference between 50 Hz and 60 Hz pumps?

Supply frequency sets how fast the motor turns, and motor speed determines what the pump actually delivers. A 60 Hz supply spins the motor roughly 20% faster than 50 Hz, which increases flow, increases head by a larger margin again, and raises the power the motor draws.

This is why a pump rated at 50 Hz will not deliver its published duty on a 60 Hz supply, and why running a 60 Hz pump on 50 Hz leaves it short of its rated performance. In the wrong direction, the higher power demand can overload the motor.

Which one do you need?

50 Hz is standard across Europe, most of the Middle East, Africa, Australia and much of Asia. 60 Hz is standard in North America, Saudi Arabia and much of Latin America — Saudi Arabia is one of the few countries outside the Americas on 60 Hz.

Always confirm the frequency at the installation site rather than assuming from the country of purchase. Most Niagara pump families are available in both variants, with duty points stated for each.
